Paint Comming Off
Permalink

I need dire help here.  I searched the forum and found nothing that helped me so I'm hoping there is someone out there that can.  I finished a new kit that came from a German Company.  I has really soft vinyl and a beautiful kit. Anyway heres the problem.  I finished painting him and started rooting his hair when I noticed under his chin the paint came off all the way to the vinyl.  Now the strange part is it's only under the chin about 3 inches across.  I tried everything, wiping it with paint thinner, alcohol, acetone repainting, heating twice you name it I think I've tried it!  Nothing, nothing is working.  I use GHS paints 265 degrees, oven thermometer 8 mins everything like normal, I even tried the matte finish first then my skin tone again NOTHING!  Starting to pull my hair out.  I washed my kit really well with hot soapy water before I started and the paint is not comming off anywhere else so I'm stumped!  This was not a cheap kit but I'm wondering it perhaps its a lost cause at this point. I've even check a few other forums and tried their advise with no luck  tears.gif
Any help is appreciated.

OMG! You poor thing :(
I would check with the company/dealer you purchased the kit from. They would be the ones with the answers. I hate to hand you off to someone but I am as stumped as you are! And you listed everything you did and that's what I would have suggested to you. So hun, I'm sorry you are having this problem but it's definately one for either the dealer or the manufacturer to explain.

Please let us know what you find out ok? BOL :)

We missed  youaww ! Anyway he is a lovely kit it's ashame I contacted the seller and she never got back to me cry Her loss I was going to purchase a few more of his kits from her but not now.  His vinyl is soo soft, I had a heck of a time rooting him it was a bit frustrating! I think that contirbuted to some of his crackling (that too was only on the chin! hmmm)  I thought at first it was the temp of my oven but it's just the one place no other spot on him had a problem confuse so I just dont know.  Thank you for your advice I guess I'll just have to chalk it up as a lost cause and place it in the X files LOL.

Hi,

I am fairly new to this but if you have given up on this one....mybe you could try some very very fine sand paper to give the paint a key....just thought if there is nothing else you can try.

You're welcome. No, I've not been away, just was working full time days and going to school full time nights. Got my college tuition paid now so I'm not working during the day now. I popped in here and there and tried to answer what I could. Good thing it doesn't go on like that the entire semester. It will take me about a week to recoup!

At my age (and I never act my age) the little things always take a lot out of me. Of course working and going to school full time, I was at my college about 15 hours a day during the week.
I'm sorry if anyone felt neglected, it wasn't intentional. But it's nice to be missed :)
I really missed being in here more often.

I tell you ,I'm starting to feel my age, but don't act it either. Minding a three yr old all day, am I past it? I love her dearly and she realy isn't a bother, she stands beside me watching TV but I think it is that you have raised yours and that was easy. Macey is very good with me and it isn't only her I have to look after, Sam with his problems and then some. Would love to be able to pack up and go on a holiday. Once Sam is sorted out and has had spinal surgery and then maybe his hip, also Sleep apneia( spell check) tests on 16/2 09. Things will get back to normal. XXXX June.

You know  I was on a German site the other day and they were saying they didn't rec. the heat set paints and to never put their kits in the oven.  They of course had their 'own' type of paint which I think were acrylics or something like that.  It does seem strange that it is in one section.  Kind of like the vinyl has something in that area that settled that won't let the paint adhear to it.  That was a good idea about the sandpaper or emory board to rouch the vinyl just a bit.  I have something called surface prep stuff.  I've never used it before...wasn't quite sure what to do with it.  I'm bad for reading directions.  Remember..I'm the 'OPPS" post. imslow.gif

No June I don't think you past it. However when I watch my younger nephews and nieces they often make me wonder that myself. There are days I do feel my age without a doubt, the aches with cold weather and heat bothers me more now then when I was younger. Same with the hubby, his shoulder and knee are a constant reminder for him but we keep going. Were both always on the move with something or another regardless. No grandchildren yet, not rushing it either. My daughter is 20 has a steady boyfriend for over two years but she needs to finish college first. My son will be 17, still in high school and needs to focus of his grades right now more than anything.

Hi, I have had the paint come off some dolls in only small spots on occasion.  It is sooooo frustrating.  It seems whenever this has happened it was on a doll kit that was made of very soft silicone type material.  And... it was only noticed when the doll was practically finished, and can no longer baked.

I dabble in painting on canvas so I happened to have some tubes of acrylic paint available.  I mixed a color to match the skintone of the doll and tried gently dabbing it on the place where the paint came off.  With lots of patience, I was able to cover the unpainted area to the point where no one would have guessed the paint was acrylic.  The hardest part  of the entire process was mixing the paint to match.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip Linda!

Sometimes if the vinyl is too smooth and still has residue (probably a release agent so they can get it out of the mold easier) on it from making the kit it can do that. This is why some say to wash all your kit parts well in hot sudsy water and rinse immediately. Some have had that on the BB vinyl because it is so smooth. And some on Berenguers too.
