New To Reborning, and this Forum!

Hi everyone!

I'm Brie, and I'm new here, as you can tell.
I've never done a reborn, but I'm very interested in getting started, however, I have no clue where to start!

Is there anything you would reccomend for me to start out with?

Thanks,
Brie

Welcome Brie aww
There are many good instructional videos on this site for reborning.  There is a beginner dvd from the Secrist website that gives you a really good start for reborning.  I personally started with the dvd (to get the basics), alot of research, and then just drove right in. I learned the most from hands on and trial / error.
Good Luck!

Hi Tina!!

Thanks for the advice! I've been doing research for the last two years. Looking at babies on eBay to see what the seller has done with them, reading and re-reading tutorials, watching videos...

I really hope to start shortly (shortly as in the next few months.)!

Welcome to our forum Brie! :) We're glad to have you. We have lots of kits and stuff to help you in your reborning journey and after you have watched a dvd or 2 and you have any questions you can always count on us to give you a hand. We have lots of great reborners here and lots of info if you want to just sit and search the forum. I think it's fun to read all the posts. We have fun here too! :)

If you want to get most of the supplies you need all in one place you can just go to our website and order a starter kit, then just get stuffing and an outfit for your baby somewhere else, (or you can get one of our cute outfits here!).

smileHi everyone, I'm new here so I hope I am doing it right. I am waiting for my deluxe reborn kit to arrive, and this will be my first reborn baby. I have been reading the forum and getting lots of hints. but I feel better knowing that if I have any problems I can sign in and get help. I'm from New Zealand and don't know any body else that does these babies other than the lady I' buying the kit of.   Glenda

I'm excited that you got the deluxe kit! It will be like Christmas opening that box! What doll kit did you choose with your deluxe?

Be sure to watch the dvd's all the way through to get yourself familiarized with the items in your kit. I'm sure you will have lots of fun reborning.

Hello Glenda and Welcome to the forum! I dvd's are a essential part of starting to reborn but also remember to think outside the box once and a while. The results you get will amaze you!

Hi my name Karon and I have just bought the blanks for "Noe".

I hope to be going on course in May to learn how to "re-born" him - can't wait.

Has any one made this doll and what colour hair did they use.

I really fell in love with his gorgeous little feet and hands - SO perfect.

Hope to hear from you all!!

Karon

I haven't done him but I too love the little hands and feet. I'm very particular about my babies and if I like the face but not the hands and feet I just can't bring myself to do them. :0
Kinda weird I know but...

Hi!
I'm another "newbie" here.  I finished my first doll using the Secrist Course #1 Mini starter kit.  My 6" Elizabeth is so cute!  Good way to be introduced to this great art form!

I'm now ready to do my first real baby and would like your opinion - should I do a preemie first or a full term?  I plan to get the Secrist starter kit since I will need all the supplies and that seems to have almost everything needed.  I'm thinking full term since I do want to learn to root hair but if I need the preemie DVD to explain basic techniques maybe I should start there (but the preemie kit doesn't include rooting).

So much to learn, so many decisions!confuse

Thank for the welcome!  I'm just about ready to order my first full term baby (using the Secrist kit; seems like the best way to go.)

I'll let you know how I'm doing when it gets here.

Hi babybj, and everyone!smile
Nice to meet you!

I got the dvd 'the art of newborning' and have just watched it. It shows how to root hair, but there are some good tutorials on this site too. I couldn't decide which kit to get  confuse and ended up with 3 dolls kits, and purchased the paints seperately through my secrist supplier, on ebay. Hoping to start tomorrow, when I get the paints through. biggrin

Hello babybj, A warm welcome to you also, I have been reborning about 16mths but previously made Porcelain dolls for over 20 yrs, a lot of them were Multi Major Award winners, so starting into reborning was another step. I started with Artist Oil paints with a teacher, what a shocker, then went to inks, which I didn't mind. Then I heard about GHSP and have been using them, they are easy to use, put them on in thin layers so they don't go chalky. When you root the head, use a sock or stocking with about a cup of rice in it, heat it in the microwave for three mins but also put a cup of water in there so the rice doesn,t burn. Happy reborning. XXXX June.

Hello newbies and everyone! Glad you're here :)
I guess your best bet would be the full size baby if you also want the rooting. It's fun but will take some time to get the hang of it. Just ask the rest of the ladies in here lol

Hi I am new to this forum. Can anyone help me with this? When applying the matte varnish as a last step, do you mix the varnish with thinners and what do you apply it with and how? Thanks

You never add thinner to the varnish as it will defeat the purpose. Just make sure you stir it in the container, then add a small amount to your sponge. You only need a very small amount or you'll get the chalkies when you bake. Just pounce it on like you did your paints. Bake about 8 to maybe 10 minutes at the usual temp.

If you have the right information, you will have no trouble reborning, but I can warn you ,It does become very addictive. I went o a lady for lessons with my first three, but she didn't use Genesis Heat Set Paints, so I bought the mini pots of pre mixed Strawberries and Cream and the set of other colours with the flesh tones, I was very nervious to start but when you purchace you first reborning kit and supplies with Secrists, you also get a free copy of their Tuturial, it has a lot of helpfull hints, but the DVD on Painting 11, is a great help, also the one on rooting. Especially if there are no teachers near you. But we are all on here to help one another, I learnt so much from reading the questions and looking in the artist showcase, you may want to ask a question but it may already have been answered. So From Oz, A VERY WARM WELCOME TO ALL YOU NEWBIES..... Happy Reborning.   XXXXXX   Junesmile smile smile smile smile

The only time I recommend the matt varnish is when you get some place on your finished doll that is shiny. Genesis doesn't need a final varnish if it's cured properly. I really wouldn't put it with the other layers. You might get the chalkies! Again, it's mainly for the last coat IF you should choose to use it.

I would say the next best dvd to get would be the beginner classroom training dvd. It's the best (IMHO) for beginners. you can start, stop, go back, anything!

Apparently I got posted somehow - so here is my question/real post:
Hi all! I'm Anna and a I'm a real newbie to even the idea of reborning. But thought I'd like to give it a try. Don't have much money (on Social Security Disability) so really need to get "the most bang for my buck". Suggestions please! Thanks

Anna, when you want to post at the top of the page or in the home page, depending on what you want to post, you go to the section, ie, like where you are now in getting started, if you want to post questions go to missellanious, post pics go to artist showcase, click on where it says Start a new Topic, when the message board has down loaded, just type in a short note of what you want to know, like Lips Colour? dont go into to much detail there as we cant respond. Then underneath you type in your message, if it is in artist showcase, put, First Baby, post pics from your photo album, slide bar to where it says broose and it will take you to the place you need to be able to get you Photo from. Hope this helps. XXXXXX June

Yes, welcome to our forum!
I know how it is to be on a "limited" income. This can be a rather spendy hobby but if you get one of the starter kits you wil be able to do several dolls from that. It really works out in the long run.
My personal suggestion is to start with a 17" closed-eyed kit. That way the doll is small enough to work on but not so small you can't and get frustrated. Sleeper means no eyeballs to worry about and you can do one of those when you get more aquainted with the materials and brushes. Be sure to get a dvd, that is tops in teaching my students. If you don't have a class near you then a dvd is a must! My suggestion would be the beginner classroom training, I think this is the best! I know it was coming with a free cd with printable pics on it for technique.

Hope this helps
