Improvements? & EBAY ????

Hi --- I  haven't posted here before, but I visit the forum every now and then.    I started painting Reborns in April so I am new to this, and I have a lot to learn. I have been trying to sell two reborns on Ebay and this is the second time I have listed each doll.  The first time out, I had bidders, but my reserve wasn't reached.   I'm curious to find out peoples' experiences, selling on Ebay.   Do the dolls usually usually take a while to sell?  When you have bidders, but the reserve wasn't met, do you ---lower your price? or continue to list at the price you think is appropriate? For those of you who sell consistently, how long did it take to build a "following" -, or build your business so that you sell your dolls consistently?

Any feed back on my auctions and "artwork" would be appreciated.
Thanks-
Gwyn

Welcome to our family forum :)

First of all one thing you should know about ebay is that it is very fickle! And especially now as it is after Christmas but before tax return time. Also we just got out of an election year! How's that for a triple whammie?! Jan/Feb is just kinda crummy for ebay sales of reborns. Everyone is looking for sales because of the after Christmas sales all the stores do I think.

Personally, I never mix an auction with a BIN. I do either one or the other. If I choose to put a reserve on my item the people can e me to ask my reserve price if they wish. It's 50/50 with the reserve... I have seen some not get many bids with one, and I have seen some without reserve just skyrocket! One went for $4600 a few weeks ago with no reserve.

Sometimes people like the face of the baby but not the limbs (I'm one of those "limb watchers" lol. If I don't like the limbs it can be the cutest baby in the world but I won't buy it. Some look at the baby AND the outfits, some buy the baby only if the outfit is a brand name :o. So see, you have a really big range of scenarios. But I think sales are down right now. It's just that time of year.

If she were mine, I might think of toning her lips down a little. For me (IMHO) her lips make her look more like a doll instead of a baby. I teach my students to look at real-life babies, then paint the lips lightly.
Step back, look in a mirror at your baby, look at your baby (now mind you, I'm not stating "your" baby in particular, this is just what I do) in the mirror with you standing in back of her in the mirror. Is this a doll you would personally want to really buy if someone else had made it? I always ask myself that question. If the answer is yes, then I leave it alone. If no, then I look seriously at changes I can make.

It's your reputation out there! Only put out what you yourselves would buy if someone else had painted it. Take a look at live babies, look at their lip color, cheek color, nails if you can get that close, eyebrows, etc. Make your babies mimic life!

I have had babies on ebay before. Sometimes it takes a while to build a following. My friend, even though she has a great following on evilbay, she just had a great baby go for under $400 which is unusual for her.

I NEVER lower my price if it doesn't sell. My work is too good to do the "garage sale" tactic. If anything, I will raise my price. Also, if you are good and put your work at too low of a price, then I think (IMHO) that people have a tendency to look for you to lower your price every time you put something on auction from then on. They do watch, believe me!

OK, I'm off my soapbox now. Hope some of this was helpful :)

Thanks Pat, gives a person alot to think about. I wasn't thinking about all the different scenarios but they do all make perfect sense.  By the way love the "evil"Bay LOL so true isn't it?
