Hey-I got some money for Christmas. I want to spend it on some instruction material for hand rooting mohair. My challenges are as follows: I'm somewhat of a newbie using 38 gauge needles to handroot mohair into hard used play doll heads with molded hair lines. I've broken several needles, the only way I can avoid doing it as much is to not hold the needle at an angle or slant at all but keep it perpendicular to the head. I also heat the head as well. I also have issues with the hair not catching all the time. When I've sanded off the molded hairlines with a dremel tool, when I go to paint those areas with GHSP, the stain is darker in those areas and I get dark splotches! I'm about ready to give up and just go with wigs, but before I do--I want to try this one last thing-to buy some instructions. What would help me better- to buy Rooting your Reborn Baby DVD or Jeanine Holpers book on Rooting Realistic Hair? Any suggestions? Thanx--Jaden
Either one would be good. Stephanie does a really good job in the dvd. If you are dealing mostly with playdolls then at least you can get the basics from her dvd. I haven't seen the inside of Jeanine's book so I don't know how detailed it is or if she deals with rooting "other" doll heads or not.
Part of the problem with the sanded parts being darker is because you have removed the "outer skin" if you will and it's like having open pores, just sucks it right in. In the playdolls and Berenguers, the vinyl is not poured evenly so this is also why the hairs don't stay in all the time in some areas. It's either too thick or too thin there. And being a rooting newbie, you really should learn the basics of rooting to begin with so at least your techinque gets good.
I wouldn't give up but you might want to consider getting some better dolls. I know they are less expensive but look at all the time and money you spend on them when you can get a preemie kit with Secrist and have the best for less! KNIM? ;)
I agree, with Pat B, my first two were berenger, and had to be heated a lot not to break needles, using a rice sack heated for 3 mins in the microwave with a glass of water in there as well, not burn the rice. I did these with a teacher and no dremel, left hair lines in and put extra hair in to cover hair lines, one is Sarah, the other is Rubyn on my web site, all the rest of my babies have mostley been Secrests apart from a couple of ltd ed. of 250- 300.
Thanks a lot, Patricia!! I appreciate your imput. It makes me feel a lot better about hanging in there with the whole hair rooting thing. I must say, I really want to master this skill because I can see the realism it adds to the dolls.
Thanks June M!!! I like your idea of just rooting over the hair lines rather than trying to sand them off. When I finish these used play dolls and have more money for doll kits--can you promise me that the doll kits from Secrist will be so soft that I won't need to heat them to root them?? That would really be something to look forward to!!! If anyone can answer this question that would be great!
I will tell you that you will be able to root the Secrist vinyl a LOT easier than most play dolls or Berenguers. With or without a rice sock you will be able to get the angle you need for really realistic hair on your baby. The Secrist vinyl can easily be rooted without a rice sock but I prefer as it is much, much easier. I rooted without it for over 4 years and it was great but with a rice sock it is marvelous!
