Collapsed Face!

Help!  I have two more problems that I could not find an answer to when I searched the Forum:

1.  I've been working all day on painting a Berenguer Angel Face doll kit (my second reborn paint job) and I put on several layers (about 5-6) plus baked the nails/lips/creases.  After my last bake (no. 7 or 8), I removed the doll head from the oven.  She was laying on her right side to cool (like all the other times).  When I went to get her about 30 min. later, the right side of her faced had collapsed at the ear and cheek....and I can't get it to come back to its natural state.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

2.  The doll is somewhat shiny.  I want to use the matte varnish but couldn't find an answer as to whether or not the varnish has to be baked as well.  I assume it does but was afraid to bake my poor baby again! lol

I really would appreciate ANY suggestions.  Thanks! smile

oh no you poor thing i always stand on the neck, try warming it up in the oven again and then as soon as it comes out fill it with a rice sock or something to push that side out and let it cool and see if it cools the right way.
also the matt varnish gets baked the same as the other layers

Why not try heating the rice sack first and see if the heat from that brings it back into shape before baking it again. When mine collapsed, it split down both sides of the neck. I had mine on it,s neck when that happened. And as Rach said you do have to heat set the matt varnish. If your worried about it collapsing again when you do the matt varnish, if your happy with the rest of the painting, put the rice sack in the head to bake ( Pat B will be back to answer posts tomorrow, so you might be wise to wait for her input.)

Okay, I can handle this one.  I've bought babies to reborn real cheap because they were out of shape, caved in someplace on the head or body.  I fix this by heating the affected part and then using a wooden spoon and potholders.  I grasp the piece with the potholder and heat it with my heatgun, or in the oven, and while the piece is still quite warm I use the wooden spoon to push the body part back to where it belongs and hold it while it cools.   You may need to repeat this process more then once, but it does work.

The next time you "cook" a head stand it up on the neck ring for heating and cooling.  If you use a pie cooling rack it will allow the hot air to circulate evenly inside of the head, and cool evenly without putting pressure on one side of the face or another.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Pat, I will definitely try your suggestion. And I did learn my lesson...to make sure the head is always standing! I can't believe I didn't do this to start with. lol

Crying 2  Believe me, we have all learned the hard way!! If we are lucky we get to experiment on our failures and turn them into successes... or at least something close.    Dragon As far as the matte varnish, mine is from Genesis and you do have to bake or heat it to set it.

I alway set my dolls on the neck also. After each layer of paint, I bake for only 5 min. to set the paint. After all of the painting is finished, I bake for the full 8 min. or whatever the suggested time for the particular doll you are making. It works great without as much baking of the vinyl. Even after 5 min. the paint will not rub off.
I agree not to bake the baby again until you see if putting the rice sock inside helps first. Good Luck! janet

I have spoken with my contact at Genesis and she said that if you are only heating the vinyl 5 minutes instead of 8 that the paint is not fully cured. Doesn't matter if you do the last layer for the 8 mins. Even if it doesn't wipe off she said that is why they state "8" minutes so it will be cured. You could find problems down the road a bit. If you want to do it it's up to you but
I wouldn't suggest this for any newbies or anyone else. Genesis knows their product.
