Hi, I have some pretty strange questions. I may be the only one that has ever asked these, but I would rather be safe than sorry. I purchased 3 pet rats, and now I am afraid to reborn because of the fumes. I am wondering if anyone can help me with this. Does anyone know if the fumes from the either the vinyl being baked, or the Genesis heat set paints, or the orderless mineral spirits can make my rats sick, or possibly kill them? I honestly dont know if any, or all of these fumes can be fatal to them. These little rats are my buddies, and I dont want something bad to happen to them. I really want to keep reborning, but dont know if its safe for them being in my home with all the fumes. If someone can help me, I would really appreciate it.
Well Sandra, We are inside while baking our babies and so are our grandchildren, if you are concerned about them, I sugest that while you are baking the babies put them outside or in another room. June M from Oz.
I really don't know. There are fumes, though, but not very strong. If you just put the rats outside for awhile, or in another room, it should be fine. I've seen pictures of ladies reborning with their dogs right with them, one of the dogs actually was eating the paint. So I doubt that it would be a problem, but if you're concerned, just put them away for awhile.

Thank you. I was just wondering if the fumes would be bad for rats or any caged animal, because they are so small. I have been reborning with my dog next to me, but she is big. Rats are so small that I dont know if it would hurt their little lungs.
The only thing I can say is that Secrist says right on the website that their vinyl is non-toxic. Also, Genesis says their paints are non-toxic. I can't speak to the mineral spirits nor anyone elses vinyl, but I do know that ANY dolls or doll kits with either silicone or PVC in them ARE toxic to humans (and especially small animals since as you said, they are smaller than us). So if you are baking anything other than Secrist kits and using paint other than Genesis, unless you have the word from the manufacturer that they are not toxic, consider them toxic and do them outside if you can.
I do kits other than Secrist and I bake them outdoors. I don't care to take the chance with anyones health (I too have small animals). Hope this helps you with your decision.
I have a secrist tutorial DVD that says to do your reborning in a well ventilated area - admittedly they were working from a store bought doll in this example so they had to use acetone to strip the paint then sand down the hair grooves with a rotary tool (both processes definately require ventilation) so I can't say whether that applies to if you are only baking a non-toxic secrist doll. I haven't had any problems with genesis and fumes. If you open a few windows and put the kitchen fan I would think it would be ok.. but to be on the safe side, as a few others have suggested, moving the rats away from the area you are baking in is probably your best bet. Good luck!
I guess I would say turn on your oven vent fan if you have one. Or yes, crack a window open some. I have two kitties (and my other one loved his friend the hooded rat!) and they are not affected by my reborning. I even asked the vet and she said it was ok. But again, like I said, the Secrist kits and Genesis paints are non-toxic.
I would never reborn a Berenguer or any other doll I have to strip paint from either in my home or in my oven, but I would never use the goof-off either. Secrist and Genesis have their stuff tested in labs for safety so for me those are ok.
If you are still worried about your little buddies, get yourself a countertop oven and bake the dolls outdoors. :) I do that for "other than" Secrist kits. There are several posts on these ovens with links to pics of them.
Ok, I thought that instead of making a new topic, I'd pick one with the same title I needed....lol...
I didn't see that this topic was answered, but can you use odorless mineral spirits (from a hardware store) with the GHSP? I already know that the thinner I have here from BnB cannot be used. I'm at a standstill with my GHSP until I get the thinner.
according to home depot and the sherwin williams paint store its either or, they both do the same thing. i have oderless thinner from sw and i had mineral spirits at first but took them back thinking i had the wrong thing but sw where i got my oderless thinner told me i could 've kept the spirits. sage
