Hi! my home oven is the worst thing in the world! i need to buy a small one just to cook my dolls. Do you know a particular oven that works fine for this? accurate and that it holds the enough time the precise temperature we need to bake this babies ?? which brand? really lost... I really need help with this, dont want to waste money....my home oven is just to hot :( Thank you! Gabriela
Let me find that link I posted elswhere in forum so you can at least get an idea. Hang tight while I lool for it. It may be in another section. Have a look yourself too! :)
Thank you so much for answering Pat. I found the link that you mentioned and i bought a Black & Decker very similar to that and let me tell you all that is fabulous! if someone wants to know more about his oven just let me know. Hugs and lets keep on reborning :) Gabriela
Yes! I'd like to know which Black & Decker model you purchased. I'm thinking of getting one, also, and I'd like to pick one that is recommended for reborning.
I am wondering about buying a small oven for my dolls also. Are the convection ovens like they have at Wal-mart online the right kind? (There aren't many stores where I live.)
You can't use a convection oven for the babies, it has to be a bake one. If you search the topic threads in forum you'll see the kind of oven and what the comments are. There are several manufacturers of them and they work wonderfully as long as you don't put them on convection. And don't use a toaster oven either as that won't work or will cause issues.
If you don't want to search the forum you can always google countertop ovens. That should bring up some.
Mine has (as you will read in other posts) bake, convection, roatisserie, and broil. It has 3 control knobs and is a Hamilton Beach. I can move it outside when baking non-safe kits.
I told BB forum leader that I had only 1 bake with convection attached knob. They said that should be alright. I got the impression, (have to read again) that that was what they used. Have to set and practice which temp is ok?? I thought I would turn on, put dolls in when correct temp, and then turn off?? Found myself wishing I had something to mix with, as I used one small jar for one doll, which did not look right at all. Practically melted her, thermometer kept falling over, hard to see. Which dvd should I get? I have the first 2 from secrist. Sugardu
Looked back at BB's answer to my question about ovens, and they have been using Haier Convection Oven with Rotisserie #RTC1700. "We bake dolls on the convection setting at 265 degrees for 8-10 minutes on each layer" ???
I looked up that oven and this is what the manufacturer says: "...Three heatingelements, on the top, bottom and back of the unit, speed roasting... The built-in fan, which constantly circulates the heat inside the oven, ... Because the air inside the cooking chamber does not remain static, as in traditional bake or roasting ovens, the convectionoven cooks foods... , faster"
I don't know if you wanted me to comment on the convection oven but for what it's worth to anyone wanting to know, here it is...
Part of the problem people have with baking the baby parts on the convection setting in those ovens is that there are "3" heating elements instead of just 2 (top and bottom) so that means more places for the parts to get burned or overheated. Plus the manufacturer states "speed roasting"! and that the convection function "cooks faster"! So we say to use bake instead on the Genesis and our vinyl. So, for anyone interested, this is not the way Genesis recommends baking their paints nor Secrist recommends baking their vinyl kits (but for other vinyl or vinyl mix kits we can't really say how you should bake them, it's totally up to you). No wonder people are having issues. And I know from personal experience with the convection setting on mine! I melted 2 sets of the fingers on the hands and I completely melted away a foot! It was on the BB pink vinyl and I was just flabbergasted!! And Genesis says "you MUST heat the paints to 265F for 8 minutes" for them to cure properly so you can't really bake for a shorter time just because the convection part is faster.
On the dvd's... the next step if you have the first 2 would be the rooting (if you need to learn rooting), otherwise I would suggest the beginner and advanced classroom training. Lots of new techniques in there. Or the special techniques encyclopedia if you want to learn the 6" mini painting from Danielle Zweers and the Ethnic painting from Michelle. Really great information! So those would be my recommendations.
I have a convection oven but it has the OPTION to just Bake or Convect/Bake. For dolls I just Bake with no convect/no fan. Still I want to know if I am going to poison myself using the family oven to bake dolls? Do you all just get a countertop toaster oven, then just for dolls?
If you want to research the ovens, I suggest the search feature in forum. There have been so many posts on it, you will find tons of info on types, brands, where to buy, how to use, what not to do, etc.
And don't use a toaster oven, that's in there too! And yes, you and your family can get sick if you bake the kits in your home oven that are not non-toxic. All of Secrist's Made in USA kits are non-toxic, and kits made in Germany (like many on DD site). Those are safe to bake in your home oven, or in a countertop oven indoors. Others... I would NEVER bake indoors or in my home oven due to toxicity issues.
Am I poisioning my family by using my in-home oven?
BTW- Any recipe must be decreased by 25 degrees on convect bake mode, so I guess if you convect bake your baby, reduce it by 25 degrees to be correct...just my guess as when I bake a cake for a recipe on 350 I have to reduce ti ot 325 for the same results on convect...I have an option to regular bake as well and that's what I've been doing my babies on.
Genesis (who makes alllll heat-set paints) says their paints are non-toxic. This is one reason why Secrist chose to use them with their made in USA non-toxic kits. So I don't worry about them.
I have done extensive research and the Secrist kits I mentioned above, Apple Valley Dollworks (Secrist's sister company) kits, and the vinyl kits made in Germany, are all non-toxic. No one, no other company will put in writing that their kits are non-toxic so therefore draw your own conclusion. IMHO if they won't put it in writing, they are not non-toxic! Even if someone tells you they are on the phone, it's your word against theirs. I do know that in kits with silicone (or silicone/vinyl mix kits), the silicone is toxic when baked. Some also have PVC's (toxic), etc.
I don't take any chances with my health, the health of my family, and pets. If it's not the brands I said above, they go outside for baking in my countertop oven.
Also, Genesis says firmly, no exceptions... "bake at 265 F for 8 mins". Do not lower the temp to compensate for the convection and do not use convection for kits. Also, we found that the internal wash used for Secrist kits must be baked at 265F for 10 minutes to be fully cured as it's inside the parts. Hope this helps hun :)
i have a table top roaster that i use for bakeing the babies , i had to borrow a rack from a toaster oven but other then that it works fab for my babies. its other attraction is that it 's pretty light weight so i can take it outside in the summer and then tote back in in for winter......................sage
I know. It's like it never ends. It ends up being a very expensive hobby as you are starting to find out hun. :o But if you only do Secrist kits for now, you can use your home oven since the Made in USA kits are non-toxic. So then thats 1 less thing to buy eh? HUGS
Sage brush and Pat- I used to do stained glass work and that was even more expensive to buy good quality glass sheets to cut up! I stopped all that as it was too tedious on my health, bending and cutting, soldering, etc. Plus I had to do it in an outdoor shed and I either sweated or froze! At least I can do thins in the house at a table sitting down! I will check Wal-mart! Thanks!
its a white .....ge....i like it cos i can put it away under my work space if i need to get it out of the way , like when company is expected.......plus i always burn my self reaching in my regular oven so this stops that........can you say klutz........lol............sage
Hi All, I`m brand new at this. I gave up sal****er hobby and venturing into reborning dolls. Surely this art hobby cannot be any more expensive than the marine hobby. Looking forward to visiting here a lot.
Hi Harts and welcome to our little family forum. Glad you came in and hope you will stay. There is lots of information in here, I believe at last look there were over 30,000 posts! Best thing would be to use the search feature at the top of the page in the red bar. Type in your word, click, and read the threads on your subject! :D
I have read in so many forums and every website I can find and yet have not found an answer. Could someone please tell me if you have to bake 8 minutes at 265 (as in preheat) or just put doll in and set timer and temp at 8 mins for 265? I have completed my first reborn, but used a heat gun and that took forever and was so hot and hard to work with, not to mention scared to melt the doll. Thanks in advance for any replies.
I know this is a very very old post, but if you see this, can you tell me which black & decker model you use? I have one I can use but I'm a little concerned about the size. Thanks!
Hi! Are you all saying it is OK to bake our babies (to set paints) in a conventional over? I read on one site to use convextion oven but I can only get a small one. Going to replace my kitchen convential stove soon and would love to use it to bake my first baby. What do you guys think???
Thanks. I am going to keep the conventional oven I was going to sell, when I get my new one, and use it in my garage with the doors open.. for my very first baby. Wish me luck. Babs
