How to Use The Authentic Reborn Premixed

Paint Set with the Beginner's Classroom DVD
by Pat Secrist

This tutorial will guide you on how to use the Authentic Reborn Petite Premixed Paint set in conjunction with the Course #3 DVD.

You wont need any thinner, except for the internal wash mix, as Authentic Reborn Premixed Paints are designed to be used without thinner.  These directions will guide you in using the premixed paints in a step-by-step manner as you follow along with the DVD.  The DVD will show you techniques in using paint brushes and sponges.  Bake Authentic Reborn Premixed Paints at 265° Fahrenheit or 130° Celsius for 8 minutes.

How to Mix The Internal Purple Wash

  •
    • You will need Premixed Periwinkle Blue
      • Authentic Reborn Premixed Periwinkle Blue
      • Paint Mix Bottle
      • Odorless Thinner
    • Fill the paint mix bottle with the odorless thinner to within a ½ inch from the top.
    • Cut the round tip off a craft stick so that the end of the stick is flat rather than rounded.
    • Use the flat end of the stick to scrape all the Periwinkle Blue out of the jar.
    • Now using the craft stick put all of the paint into the paint mix bottle.
    • Shake well until all of the paint is absorbed into the thinner.
    • Now you have the perfect mix and are ready to apply the internal wash as demonstrated on the Course #3 DVD!
  • Veins
    • Dont use any paint thinner at all.
    • You will need:
      • Premixed Vein Paint
      • Authentic Reborn #6 Veining Brush
      • Cosmetic foam Wedge
    • The vein paint comes premixed and you don't need to thin it with odorless thinner.
    • Apply a small amount of vein paint in your paint palette and spread it out into a thin layer.
    • Roll your veining brush in that paint until there is a thin but even coat of paint on it.
    • Paint on a vein as demonstrated in the Course #3 DVD.  Use the photo veining chart for reference.
    • Use the sponge to blot off excess vein paint as shown in the DVD.
    • Turn the sponge over to a clean side then rub the vein with the sponge to lighten it further and soften the edges of the vein.
  •  Skin Texture Foundation Layer
    • Dont use any paint thinner at all.
    • You will need:
      • Authentic Reborn Skin Texture foundation paint
      • Mushroom Sponge set
      • Petite Craft Stick
    • Now use the craft stick to scoop out of the jar an amount of Skin Texture Foundation paint about the size of ¼ of a penny.
    • Spread the paint on the center of the end of the sponge until it all soaks into the sponge leaving no blobs or streak of paint on the surface of the sponge.
    • Now firmly press the sponge onto a paper towel once to unload any excess paint.
    • Now press the sponge firmly onto the vinyl and pull it off. You should have a dime size paint dot on the vinyl. Begin to pounce on the paint dot starting in the center then moving outward in a spiral motion until the paint dot has completely disappeared and an even coat of skin texture dots has been created. Repeat this process to cover the vinyl parts with and even coat of skin texture paint dots. This will result in an even skin texture over your entire baby. Pounce out the paint so that you can barely see the skin texture dots.  If the dots are too bright or chalky then you have too much paint on the sponge.  Unload all of the paint from the sponge and pounce over the chalky areas to remove the excess paint leaving a faint skin texture pattern behind.
    • Now bake at 265° Fahrenheit or 130° Celsius for 8 minutes.
  • First Blush Layer
    • Dont use any paint thinner at all.
    • You will need:
      • Strawberry or Peaches & Cream Blush
      • Cosmetic Foam Wedge
      • Craft Stick
    • Take the craft stick and apply the Strawberry Blush to the center of the sponge smoothing the paint directly into the sponge until there are no blobs or paint streaks left on the surface of the sponge at all.
      • Scoop out of the jar an amount of blush paint about the size of ¼ of a penny onto your craft stick.
    • Now you are ready to pounce the blush onto the vinyl.
      • It's always better to start with too little blush and add more later than too make the baby too red from the start.
      • One thin splotchy layer of blush is usually sufficient.
      • If after looking at the baby in natural sunlight if you still feel it needs more blush, bake the current blush layer and then reload the sponge in the same manner and add more blush.
      • You can always add more blush later on, after you have painted the lips, creases and wrinkles - but it is nearly impossible to remove it!
      • Now bake at 265° Fahrenheit or 130° Celsius for 8 minutes.

  • Blushing Detail
    • Dont use any paint thinner at all.
    • You will need:
      • Strawberry or Peaches & Cream Blush
      • Cosmetic Foam Wedge
      • Craft Stick
      • Authentic Reborn #3 Detail Mop
    • Use a dry sponge for this step. You won't need any thinner at all.
    • Scoop blush paint out of the jar and onto your craft stick.
    • Apply the Strawberry Blush evenly to the end of the sponge smoothing the paint directly into the sponge until there are no blobs or paint streaks left on the surface of the sponge at all.
    • Tap the end of your #3 Detail Mop onto the painted surface of the sponge to pick up and transfer the paint from the sponge to the entire tip of the brush.
    • Now using your #3 Detail Mop pounce the strawberry blush paint onto the vinyl as demonstrated in the Course #3 DVD to create the rashy looking pattern desired.
      • Now bake at 265° Fahrenheit or 130° Celsius for 8 minutes.
  • Lips
    • Dont use any paint thinner at all.
    • You will need:
      • Authentic Reborn #4 Lip & Nail Brush
      • Strawberry or Peaches & Cream Blush
      • Cosmetic Foam Wedge
    • Use the #4 Lip & Nail Brush to scoop a very tiny, tiny amount right from the jar of Strawberry Lip paint.
    • Apply the paint to the inside of the lips first then spread the paint outward towards the edge of the lips.
      • The goal is to apply one very, very transparent layer of paint - you want a thin, natural-looking coat of paint. Heat set then paint one more very transparent layer.
      • Don't use any thinner at all.
    • If you use a tiny enough amount then you should be able to spread it around so the lips have no streaks or smudges at all.  If you have too much paint on the lips then blot some of the excess paint off with a clean sponge.
    • The lip color should be very light and transparent.  You should be able to see through the color to the vinyl beneath.
    • Real babies' lips are very light in color - too dark and they look like they're wearing lipstick!
    • Now bake at 265° Fahrenheit or 130° Celsius for 8 minutes.
  • Creases and Wrinkles
    • Dont use any paint thinner at all.
    • You will need:
    • Using the #7 Crease & Wrinkle brush dip a very tiny amount of Crease & Wrinkle paint right from the jar.
    • Next apply paint to each wrinkle, crease, and crevice.
    • Reload brush only as necessary.  Don't use any thinner at all.
      • Once you have painted all of the creases & wrinkles go back and lightly blot each one with a Cosmetic Foam Wedge to pick up excess paint.
      • Do not press too hard or you will lift the paint right out of the wrinkle or crease.
      • If the paint in the crease is still too dark then lightly blot with a sponge again.
    • Now go back and feather the creases using your #4 Feathering Mop brush.
    • Feather in a direction that is perpendicular to the direction of the crease.
    • Feather very lightly so that you don't remove all of the paint from the crease.  Your goal is to soften the edges of the paint line in the crease.
    • Now bake at 265° Fahrenheit or 130° Celsius for 8 minutes.

Bake Between Each Step
Don't forget to bake the paint in between each step above.  If you are not sure if your paint is dark enough bake it first after one layer (though it will not lighten) and then take it outside to look at the doll in natural sunlight.  If you still feel the paint is not dark enough apply another extremely thin coat of paint and bake again.  Remember, you can always add more paint later, you can't remove paint though!

Dont over-bake the paints - use an over thermometer.
Bake at 265° Fahrenheit (130° Celsius) for eight minutes in an oven. If you are using a heat gun bake for 5 to 10 seconds.

Remove any shine

Sometimes when paint is layered a bit of a shine can arise.  This is easily removed by pouncing on a very, very thin layer of Authentic Reborn Superior Shine Remover.  Only apply shine remover after you have completely finished the painting.  Bake the Superior Shine Remover at 265 degrees Fahrenheit or 130 Celsius for 8 minutes.  See the tutorial on using Superior Shine Remover on page 15 of the 2009 Secrist Tutorial Catalog Guide.

Don't Under Estimate the Importance of Lighting

Often times the lighting in your work area is not color accurate and causes over-painting which makes the doll too dark and not nearly as lifelike.  We have a Daylight Lamp that is perfect for creating the most lifelike baby colors possible.  The lamp perfectly simulates natural sunlight, when you paint your baby under this natural sunlight-type lamp the colors are far more lifelike.  The lamp also includes a large magnifying lens for painting fine details and revealing small painting flaws.  Painting mistakes can easily be fixed as long as you find them before baking.  This magnifying glass helps you do just that.

If you plan to sell your baby dolls, the Daylight Lamp is extremely important in helping you achieve the most realistic babies possible.  The 19 Rosie, shown above, was painted using the Daylight Lamp and as you can see she has incredibly accurate coloration.  Learn more about the Daylight Lamp on page 51 of the 2009 Secrist Tutorial Catalog Guide.

Rosie was newborned by Pat Secrist using the Authentic Reborn Strawberry Complexion paint set, following the instructions above.

Pat also used the Authentic Reborn Premixed Veining paint for the veins on the forehead; the Moist Glaze Medium shown on the eyelids; and Baby Tears on the mouth, nostrils, and eye creases.  Now all Rosie needs is some eyelashes and hair!

It was only because he was doing a tutorial on the strawberry complexion paints, not demonstrating how to paint the whole doll. Maybe you should imagine she has eyebrows hehehe lol just kidding but "I" thought I was funny hehehe

Updated Tutorial

Using Strawberry or Peaches & Cream Complexion Premixed Paints
By Pat Secrist

  • Blush:  Apply five drops of the odorless thinner to a sponge in a 5-dot pattern like you would see on the face of playing dice. The 5-dot pattern makes it easy for the paint to transfer from the sponge to the vinyl.
    • You don't need a paint palette for this step.  You can work right out of the jar by scooping incredibly tiny amounts of paint onto your craft stick.
    • Take a craft stick and apply the strawberry blush to the sponge smoothing the paint directly into the sponge until there are no blobs or paint streaks left on the surface of the sponge at all.  Now you are ready to pounce the blush onto the vinyl.
    • It's always better to start with too little blush and add more later than too make the baby too red from the start.  One thin layer of blush is usually sufficient.  If after looking at the baby in natural sunlight if you still feel it needs more blush, bake the current blush layer and then reload the sponge in the same manner and add more blush.  You can always add more blush later on, after you have painted the lips, creases and wrinkles.
    • For the most realistic look apply a very fine and even blush layer BEFORE your flesh 08 paint layer.  Then apply a more another thin blush layer again after you have applied the flesh layer.

(Pat B ,) Sorry to be a pain in the you know where, Could that  BEFORE your flesh 08 paint layer.  Go to the top before the blush section. As I started from the top with out reading, IIIIII know, Stupid me.weirdface.gif June M from Oz.

I'm not sure if he did any or not. Like June said, it is about the new colors. I can ask him if you like. I imagine that he may have just because he did do the veins. But then again, he didn't do any eyebrows! lol

I like the new paints too (S&Cr) but in my avatar, little Phoebe is wearing the original peaches & cream paints. I can't decide which ones I like better. When I do BB vinyl though, I do use the p&c colors as the vinyl is already a pink. Don't want to add more pink and have to color correct!

I find that either set (P&C or S&C) work well with Secrist vinyl. It has such a neutral fleshtone to start out with.
Berenguers would use the S&C instead because of the orangey skintone they are made with.

If using a pink skin kit from secrist would you still do the first layer blush or skip to skin tone color?

A "pink skin kit from Secrist"??? We only have neutral fleshtone unless I'm missing something here?

Even on the BB "pink" kits I would do my flesh (2 layers) and then my first blush layer. If doing a pink tone kit you would go to your colorwheel and correct for the pink color by using the right neutralizing color with your first layer of fleshtone.

Pat b, one piece of my Phoebe had a pink leg, and they have replaced her , which I am so greatfull for. They said they replaced it because the vynal was faulty, but not because she split, that may have been my fault.

Hopefully you have a Secrist DVD AND the Secrist Genesis paints. Out program will not work the same with anyone elses Genesis (like the ones BB sells).
Also, do you have the premixed all the individual colors? Makes a difference :o
And if you've used "loads of paint" that is not a good sign! The Genesis are to be used lightly/thinly so if you have too much paint on and you have baked your baby you may need to strip it back and start over.

Let me know ok?

I'm about to purchase the blushing kit, and am thrilled to use it. My question is...
How does blushing compare to motteling? Is there a difference? If so can someone explane it to me?
Another question I have is the Advanced DVD that Secrist has, does the DVD cover motteling? I'm trying, and failing, to get it the way I really want.
Does anyone know of any tutorial specifically focusing on motteling?
And should blushing and motteling be used together?
Thanks! have a great day. Willa sun.gif

Hello Willa
If you search through the forum there are a few threads with great ideas on mottling, there is a great on on the use of a common household sponge. I can't remember which one the but thread thread usually always leads another great one.

Yes, as Tina said, there are some really good threads on mottling (and a few on blushing too but not as many). ;)
Blushing is one of the final steps you do on your baby. It kind of brings them to life. The "blushing" is basically a flushed look to the skin. A glow if you will on the peaches n cream skintone babies.
Motteling is different skintone colors with blushing, veining, kind of that cold look some babies get in their skin. Even adults get it when they're skin is cold. Look at your hands and inner arms. Some people prefer to do the motteling with a brush, some with a sea sponge, some with just dots of the color on a regular triangle makeup sponge. We teach that you do the motteling layer after the base color and veining but before the bi-color flesh step.

If you're just doing the 3 step method in the tutorial here, just go by what Mr Secrist's Rosie look like in the pic. I still put on a flesh basecoat first before doing the steps above. The tutorial here is just a different method. I like the full method myself better but that's just me. I do occassionally do this method too, I like it more for the smaller bubs. I find that when I do the full method my bubs come out more realistic as they have lots more detailing. But if you read above, he did also do veins (whiich makes it more than 3 steps lol). :)

The advanced classroom dvd also shows the motteling steps but obviously in a more advanced and not so slow paced format.

I mottle first, then blush for my final step before applying the glazing gel to the lips, nails, and eyelids. I know this all sounds pretty confusing. That is why we recommend the beginner classroom dvd. It shows all the steps to get a realistic baby in a nice format. And you can go back or go to any part you like or missed or watch the same part over and over again if you like. And it stops right after each section.

Hope this helps

I am a new reborner and I just did my first mottling using a sea sponge lightly brushed with the color.  It came out very nice...at least I thought so.

Pat,
I was wondering if you can use the old GHS paints (with thinner) along with these new paints(without thinner) You know what I mean? Like the thinner free paints for the foundation and then maybe a blush color with the old GHS using thinner all on the same doll. Whew I have a heck of a time explaining myself in writing. I hope you understand what I was trying to say. I want to try the thinner free paints but still have some of my old paints left.

I'm just wondering.  The 3pc of the strawberry and peaches and cream are really little.  I bought both and two different ones only had 1/2 amount of paint in it.  I'm just thinking these paints are not really going to last like they said.  I've done like three small ones and I'm using it like they said, but I have like twice as much in the lip as I do in the blush...the one that you would use more.  So now I see they have the no shine with it. Why are these containers so small and do they offer larger ones?  If the new set is 35.00, are they those tiny little containers?  I'm not good with what is 1/4 ounce and 1/2 ounce size is.  I have about the one ounce size of the BB paints. I have the set of flesh tones and they are in those little sizes, but really you hardly need much paint at all with the thinner which I get the mineral spirits at WM for 4.00 for like 50 plus ounces.  heck...I'm just now running out of it and it's been like 5 or 6 or more months.

I'll get back to you on your questions on the amount of blush -vs- the lip. I thought all the "petites" (the small ones) were all supposed to be filled to the top. Hang in there! :)

I bought the petit paint set and I was also shocked with the amount of paint in the jars. Well one was full to the neck of the jar, the others was less than half. It was like one scoop on the side of the jar, with the bottom clearly visible. I bought the set with the wrinkle and crease-, lips-,  blush paint, etc etc.

Ronel,
I think I responded to this same question that you posted in another thread.

Hi, I'm just wondering,
how do you strip your baby after you've baked it, and start over?
I think I might have to with my Missy.

Make sure you really need to before you do this. Genesis are so forgiving that you can usually fix instead of a do-over.

In any event, Secrist does have paint/stain remover: http://www.secristdolls.com/inc/sdetail/24522 or sometimes I use acetone. One thing you must keep in mind when stripping... DO NOT RUB! Sorry, not yelling just makeing an important statement. Take your cotton ball or soft colorfast material, wet with solution, then lightly go one stroke at a time, then switch to a clean section of the cotton ball or cloth. If you rub you make take off the protective skin so to speak and then you will get a shiny spot that may not hold any paint.

After you have stripped the area, wash in hot sudsy water and a grease busting detergent to remove all residue because they all leave some. Dry for a day or so on a paper towel. Then inspect, if all is ok, go ahead and re paint. :)

They said the spliting of the vinyl was your fault??  How could it be your fault?? That would have made me upset. Did you use your teeth or something? duh

Aw, I rubbed the thinner, made a bit of a mess of her and tried to repaint her.
It didn't look good. I over baked her too :o(
So, I've salvaged the body and limbs, and waiting for a new Missy head to come in the post from the Secrsit dealer I use.
It turned out that the one I spoilt was Lollipop. But I'm going to keep her head to practise rooting on.
I did complete Zoe, my avatar, on Friday though and am pleased with the results.
I've realised by my mistakes, and well, life is a learning process!
Thank you for your advice though, it's much appreciated!

HI EVERYONE: I AM SO CONFUSED. I HAVE BOTH STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM AND PEACHES AND CREAM AND AM AWAITING MY SKINTONE PREMIXED. NOW, I READ THE ENTIRE THING ABOUT NOT USING ANY THINNER. AND THEN DOWN FURTHUR, I READ THAT YOU STILL PUT A FIVE DOT PATTERN OF THINNER ON YOUR SPONGE AND THEN ADD YOUR PREMIXED STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM PAIN.  DO YOU NEED THE FIVE DOT THINNER PATTERN OR IS THAT NOT TO BE USED? I DON'T WANT TO WAIST PAINT OR RUIN A BABY. THANK YOU, VESTA

Hi Vesta, I see you're finding your way around the forum quite nicely :)
The method you use all depends on what paints you have (will have). The original Genesis paints do need thinner. The new Authentic Reborn paints do not need any. Since we carry 2 kinds of paints we need 2 different sets of directions to use with each kind. Do a little search in the paints section of forum, there's lots of others tthat have posted about this confusion too. And if some instructions came with your paints, by all means use those.
HOpe this helps hun,

This tutorial has been changed to reflect the NEW "Authentic Reborn (TM)" paints by Secrist. Please read the ENTIRE tutorial before making any changes in how you apply your paints. Also, see the tutorial in the new 2009 tutorial guide that is available now! :)

I have had to strip a baby and was directed to use Goof off. You can find it at Home Depot. It worked really good. I poured it in a bowl and then kept brushing it on until the paint was almost off. Then I used a rag to wipe it off paying close attention to creases. I then washed the baby is dawn dish soap to get rid of any  residue. will warn you not to do it indoors. The fumes are horrible. The doll will smell like the goof off for awhile but just letting it sit for awhile the smell goes away.

Problem with goof-off is it's used as a automotive and aircraft parts cleaning solvent and should NOT be used on any dolls! It always leaves a residue and penetrates the vinyl (that is why you still smell it afterwards). Also it is a carcinogen and can also cause not only liver and kidney damage but nerve damage (which I have) and also brain damage. Use at your own risk!!! Just an FYI... even the dishwashing liquids do not actually remove all the residue, it seeps into the vinyl.
