A visual guide to rooting
Permalink

Quote - from my response in topic "best rooting method"
"I do root from the center of a strip of hair -- even though i've read what some have said about this, i've never had a problem with the outcome. I'll cut a piece of hair about one inch in width and about 4" in length. I'll lay this horrazontally on the area of head i'm about to work and root in at an angle for the direction i wish the hair to lay.

I actually start from the outer hair line and work in toward to crown of the head, starting with the front of the head, so that the front/top head is rooting first. I then work again from the outer hair line of one of the sides of head, working in toward to crown again, then the back and other side of the head.

when working in toward the crown i actually leave the crown for last - so that once i've worked all sides of the head i have a circular bald spot about an inch in diamiter left where my crown will be. I'll lastly work this - directionally rooting to create a nice swurl.

I'll take some pics and link them here of my next rooting as i progress through if you'd like so you can see what i'm trying to explain here. I'm painting up a luca as we speak and will probably start rooting her this evening, so will post pics tomorrow showing her hair in stages. I can now create an entire baby in about 24hrs of work. Seeing this visually might help more than what i'm trying to explain."

Ok so i took the photo's as i rooted a "Luca" head this evening, i've combinded them together in the one image *see link below*

I do not claim to be an expert in hair rooting, this is just a suggestion and example as to how i have evolved my own technique - i'm constantly learning and experimenting. This is my current method

TinyEarthAngels has created a tutorial page on her website for me using the pictures I took while rooting this baby - shows the process much better than the link i gave above - please visit the link below for a better look-see

http://www.tinyearthangels.com/preciouslullabies.html

I was intending on editing the first post i made in this topic to give this new link but apparently one can only edit for a small time period and so i can't change it now.

Anyway hope this helps others some, i know when i first started reborning i looked for some visual guide or tutorial when it came to the rooting but couldn't really find anything so maybe this will be useful for others.

The rooting DVD with Stephanie Sullivan is also a good tool! She does a very nice job.

Precious Lullabies - Naomi - I have questions for you, if that's OK with you. 1. How do you get your hair strands so long please, mine always come out much shorter? 2. What is the reason for wetting the mohair, and will it take out the curl on "curly mohair?

Thanks so much for your help on rooting - it is very much appreciated. I tried watching the Secrist DVD -so sorry, but the Secrist DVDs "roll" the pictures - and I cannot see anything - so I must get help by some other source - Sorry Pat B.

Oops, sorry, I forgot yours rolls. Sounds like the tracking.

I hold my mohair farther down towards the end but not quite. And as for taking curl out of mohair...
all you do it to wet down your mohair with water or water/conditioner. Then whle wet, put a nylon stocking over the head and let air dry for a day or two. When you take off the nylon the hair should be fairly straight :)

answers

1) how i get my pieces so long??? hmmm i don't know i just cut it to the length i want to work with. I'm not sure how or why your having difficulty with this - mybe the quality of the hair you've bough?? Depending on the head size i'm working on, i usually root into pieces between 4-6" long.

2) the water - i spay a comb my hair as i've rooted sections to keep it neat, to see that its all falling in the direction it should be and to ensure i'm getting a very consistant and even cover. In the "tutorial" I've use straight mohair. Curly mohair will comb a little straight while wet but will curl again.

Actually curly mohair can get very messy and matted while rooting, i've found wetting it down as i go is even more important to keep it nice a neat. Once i've given it the hair cut later i can either brush it down to be wavy or wet it and ruff it up to form all over curls.

as Pat said, you can *set* curly mohair straight by putting a nylon over it while wetand letting it dry... but as soon as you spray it wet again the curl will return. Kind of like curling straight human hair - only all in reverse.
