I have bought what I believe to be genuine mohair from a secrist dealer in the uk, I have followed the Secrist dvd, but Im sure ive gone wrong, Ive used the 38 gauge needle, but my poor baby looks like she has black holes on her head, and now before I have completed the rooting all of my mohair has gone messy and is breaking up and the bits im rooting are coming through too short. And Ive just broke my last 10th needle, aarrrrggghhh!!!!! I feel like giving up already. Please can anyone advice me cry

Everyone has their own ideas and their own style. Some root from the crown, some do a side at a time, some start in the front and go back, etc... its all a style thing.

How does the mohair look and feel? Is it soft and silky? Does it feel like quality? And the black holes may be caused by your needles. We have had a few in forum that found out their needle was making the black or dark colored holes. Have you rinsed some of the mohair to see if it's colorfast? I know this probably seems like a lot of questions but these are some of the variables in problems.

Also, there is a difference between "genuine" and "quality" mohair, and you (usually) get what you pay for. Cheap price, cheap mohair. Hopefully your dealer has good mohair. :) Your mohair should not break up in bits. Sometimes its the mohair and sometime its the needles cutting the hair when it gets inserted into the head.

You said 38 guage needle? The guage needle is the size of hole it makes in the vinyl. How many barbs does it have? I really like the 40 guage/3 barb needles the best. They're shaped like a triangle with 1 barb (or slit) on each of the 3 edges. Only puts 1-3 hairs in at a time.

Please don't give up! I am certain we can get to the bottom of this. :o

Is it the mohair on their site for £3.50 ? If so I can almost assure you that it is NOT quality mohair so that would explain the breakage. As I said, you really do get what you pay for. The less expensive mohair is not usually quality and is basically for beginners who are practicing (IMHO) or for people who are wanting a more course hair.

I have never seen a 30 guage needle with 1 barb. Those are usually the German 40 guage and up. If you take a magnifying glass and look closely at the shaft of the needle, I'm sure you will find more barbs (or cuts/slits) in it. If you have a practice limb or play doll, stick the needle in it a few times with no mohair and see if you get the black holes. That should tell you if its the needle making the marks.
