hey i'm in Perth WA but am a Tassie girl born and breed -- a burnie brat!!!

the paint peeling is something i've never come across before... all i can think is, is it like peeling/scratching off, or is it comming off onto the baking tray on the side that is in contact with this?? -- if its the first, i have no idea and have never heard of this before. If its that its coming off onto the baking tray this could be because the metal heats hotter than the actual temp in the oven and could be "melting" it off???? I cook using a tray lined with cloth.

the chalkiness is interesting given that yo uare using the Archival Oils oderless solvent as when using this brand i never have problems with the chalk look. however, the other solution to rid the chalk look other than using Archival would be to do a really very thin wash over the entire vinyl pieces with a very small amount of a fleash 07 or 06. I'd use a LOT of thinner and next to no actual paint - enough to just tint the mix a little. paint this all over and the chalk look should reduce without really changing the colour of the paint work already on the piece.

please let us know if this works

I use a thik almost yogurt like consistancy of a flesh 08 to start (and i don't get the chalk look so i don't know whats going on there for you esp as you already use Achival Oils solvent - which is what i usually advise ppl).

I then move to thinner paint mixes more like milk (sticking with dairy foods as discriptors). I mix my own shades - i tend to apply these with a small bit of kitchen sponge http://www.thegreenguide.com/images/boards/46/966/main.jpg for their lovely blotchy effect.

time and prectise certinally make perfect... even now i'm constantly playing with new ways to create the most realistic effects. Every baby i do is an improvement on the one before. I think in the beginning i improved somewhat with each baby, but it was a slow curve. Three or some months in i suddenly found improvements came in remarkable change.

It takes prectise and an adventerous spirit... you've got to be game to play around and take chances in developing your own techniques. Don't be scared to make mistakes as its only with risks that real devellopement of skills can come.

Most important is to have fun!!!

The only time I have heard of the paint peeling or flaking off is if you are doing a silicone kit or doll. The silicone needs silicone paint, not any other kind will last. Most vinyl/silicone mix kits would be ok with either Genesis or oils. And our Secrist vinyl (contains no silicone) should only have Genesis used on them.

Usually I would say that the chalky look is too much paint. Sometimes you can bake for an extra 2-3 minutes and it comes out ok. But sometimes people use too much thinner to paint ratio. The chalky is usually noticeable in creases, wrinkles, and between fingers and toes.

I'm not really sure about the yogurt consistancy for the paint, this is a fairly new technique. It works for some and some it doesn't. I would do a test part first to see if it is good for you. If so then give it a go! http://www.secristdolls.com/inc/sdetail/13174

I've heard of it happening when the paint isn't being completely cured (either using too low of a temp or not baking long enough) and layers being added.

There is another reason that happens, although I have not had that problem with Secrist dolls. Some times the processing of the vinyl leaves a residue on the part. I always make sure I wash my parts off in very hot water before I start the painting process. And make sure the parts are good and dry... I usually leave them over night to dry.

I paint when I'm off and root when I'm working so when I wasn't quite off but toward the end of my school year I bathed all four of my sculpts I had to work on and they had about a week to dry. =D It was my way of starting early!

I always bathe all my "other" doll kit parts. Not Secrist as we do not have a residue on our parts (per Mr Secrist). Especially silicone mix as the silicone itself is filmy.

I am having a similar problem with my latest baby so any advice would help...Here's my problem.  I finished painting an "Angelo" kit by L.S. It began with an orange yellow vinyl, I washed it in hot sudsy water and started painting like normal 265 f, 8 mins the whole 9 yards.  Anyway he was all painted perfect coloring finally achieved, and I started rooting his hair.  I have 3/4 done when I notices under his chin the paint rubbed completely off!  No other place that I can see but there.  I know from similar problems that covering that area to match the rest of his face is now going to be next to impossible right?  Is there any ideas as to why or how to fix this?  I am a tad heartbroken and in need a glimmer of hope that this can be fixed.  All of you wonderful ladies have come through for me in the past and I'm crossing my fingers someone has a suggestion to my problem cry.

Tina,
I have posted in your other thread about this problem.

And for all you out there using Genesis, they do say "no metal" containers, bowls, pallats, etc because the Genesis paints can have an adverse reaction. Don't know if this is related to your problem or not.
