I'm really happy with how this baby has turned out, I've just finished now and had to take some pics to share. Not yet painted but will up date again once i've done so
Amazing! Only your 3rd try! My 5th & 6th still looked like someone who is just starting. My others with the sculpting form aren't so bad now but they can still need some work.
when i cooked him to cure the super-sculpey he craked up. Huge fracture lines opened up across his face. I tried filling them with more sculpey, but as quickly as i could patch him up more cracks would appear.
I didn't even get him painted and i was so pleased with this one that i wasn't even going to smash him up myself.
it all so sad!!!
I asked shelley halperin - I've just reborn a prototype for her of her latest sculpt which is to be released in about a month. Anyway she told me to use "pro-sculpt" instead, that she'd had some babies crack up when using sculpey herself.
but i'm still sad that this little one was lost :(
i didn't use anything in the centre, my other mistake i guess - it was solid sculpey as i didn't use a sculpting form. I've read that its an idea to make a foil armature/sculpt form and build around that.
Yes, some use a styrofoam form or ball carved out for the placement of the features and then you can cover it with foil.
Solid is not usually good if it's a larger peice. I know with ceramic clay that we hollow it out or the peice will explode in the kiln!
YOu may want to try one of our sculpting forms if you haven't already.
Prosculpt is really good for making babies but you need to bake within a week to a max of 2 weeks (covering with plastic in the meantime while working on it. I know you can get prosculpt from www.artdolls.com Jack Johnston is a wonderful sculptor and he created prosculpt! Give it a go I say!!
The reason I ask is I want to do a mini-baby (although I'm going to hold off for a bit since I've found out that it is supposed to be easier to do a larger one, first). I tried making a foil armature and YIKES! That was a disaster. I did read in a tutorial that for small ones you can actually make and bake a clay armature for the head. That made sense since you'd actually be baking it in layers and of course they are notably smaller. Anyway, if you can bake the styrofoam ball I'd prefer that even more!
