Well, I am very new to all this and found a wonderful book at my local hobby store on sculpting dolls of various sizes. So while I wait for my supplies for starting newborning next week (hopefully), I got some polymer clay, some sculpting tools, and other stuff I'll need and I'm going to try my hand at sculpting a little. I've always been interested in the subject. I'll try to post pics of my progress IF it goes well. Wish me luck!
Oh boy what did I get into! I've spent the last 5 1/2 hours, yes hours, working with my little sculpting experiment! I'm not sure how I feel about her yet as I'm still trying to smooth her down so there won't be any problems in baking her in the morning. For my first ever, I think she's ok, i think she's a little unporportioned and I had a hard time with the clay (kept cracking and breaking a little in the small parts like feet and hands). I think so far the best part is adding the little touches like the baby creases and fingers and facial features. Couldn't do nails, too small but I'm sure I can paint them on tomorrow after she cools. I think I'll post pics, not sure yet as I don't think she's good enough, but we'll see.
Well, I think i tried to make her too small for the first time. Rough areas and some other problems I had. I still have her, but will not be posting her pics. I have started another one, bigger than the first and it has been easier and I'm trying a new technique with the limbs and neck. I'll bake her probably tomorrow as I want to get her as smooth as possible. Hopefully I'll get to post her pics tomorrow.
Hi,.. Yes ,..its better to practice sculpting on a bigger doll,..than aftere a while when you are comfortable with that you can sculpt smaller. Danielle
I have found that doing the hands, feet separate from the actual body then attaching them once completed is easier. She is turning out to be better than I expected. After looking at pictures of my son when he was just born, I'm seeing where I need to add the baby fat to her arms and legs and it's turing out well. My husband asked I move her to another location in our home (she's in our bedroom on my dresser so my 3 cats don't mess with her), because she creeps him out lol. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to complete her belly area or not. She's laying on her stomach, yawning (my favorite facial expression), with her hands next to her head a little. But I think her one arm (most prominent) could be better, but I can't see a way to fix it. Here, I'll post pics so you guys can see, please give feedback if possible. Please keep in mind she is only my second attempt at this so be kind as I am very critical of myself as it is. BTW, the pink hat is one of my daughter's old sockets with the toe area cut off.
erg - my camera isn't working right, didn't save the one with her hat on her. Oh well, there will be more. But here she is so far. Like I said I think her arm is a little...weird. Any ideas how to fix? Please be nice but truthful about feedback.
Hi,. I dont think her arm is weird,...though her leg looks a little to short compaired to her arm perhabs you can adjust that leg....and you can smooth the clay with your finger perhabs you like to use some smoothing oil .
Hi, I can see the type of baby you are trying for. There is a wonderful new DVD that I purchased on Ebay for $18 including shipping. This woman is fantastic. You can buy the DVD alone, but she also offers face molds in a lot of sizes to get you started. They are $5 each. If you want the link, let me know at dubilh@aol.com. Bonnie

LOL. I wish I knew that earlier. My mini-baby head attempts look like old men. I put it down for a while to work on my painting. I forgot that Secrist sold armature for arms and legs. When I get to the point of wanting to try it full fledge again I'll be back for them! But head first!
We do have head armatures in small, med, and large. None for limbs yet though.
I really love the head armatures because I don't have to mess with all that foil and styro. AND I can sculpt a head with everything in the right place! My faces still need work but not as much as if I wouldn't have had one.
Hi..my name is sharon..I am a beginner in scuplting. I would love check this out if I may have the link please. Also can you tell me..after sculpting I plan to root it. But should I bake it then before I paint or do I paint after rooting and then bake. Do I need to cover the hair when baking? Thanks so much for your time. Sharon.
