Mohair Color
Permalink

Hi, I was wondering if there was an easy way to lighten the color of mohair.  I just ordered some from Secrist and I am worried it is a little too dark.  The color is called carrot, but it is just a little darker red than I was hoping for.  I was just wondering if there was something I could do to work with it.

I will say that this is my own fault, the color is pretty close to the way it looks on the website, but I thought it might be a little lighter in person.  Oh well, next time I will know.  aww

Sorry, I don't know anything short of a complete dye job.

Is dyeing the mohair complicated?

I've never done it but people who do it use regular hair dye.

I rather like the idea of using both the carrot and the light blonde, as suggested above. I think it would give a very natural look without having to resort to messy dying - and you would achieve the "lighter" red hair you are looking for overall.

I have dyed the mohair. I had a light blond and I wanted a strawberry red. I got some 2.99 hair dye and dyed it. It worked fine. After the process was done I washed it several times to make sure all the color was out.

I also wanted to let you know that I purchased hair from secrist. It was the light brown I believe. IT still looked way to dark when I got it....I decided to go ahead and root anyway. I was actually pleaseantly surprized when I started roothing and seperating the clump...the hair wasn't as dark. It was actually the color I wanted.

When I rooted the doll whith red hair....It was pretty bright...not the red I was going for so I added some of the light brown in and it toned down that bright carrot look.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, great tips and suggestions. I think I will try combining the color I got with another lighter color. I think that will work well.

I also use several other colors of mohair to root a head like Danielle suggested. You are right! It gives a more natural look (as human hair is a mix of tones and colors naturally). I do one or two shades lighter and 1 darker for lowlights. Looks great!

Also, I do use people hairdye (but my hair is still attached to the hyde and makes it easier) but I use non-ammonia dye. That way it's easier on the hair, and you don't usually get funny undertones.
