Genesis Paints versus air dry paints?

I started out with ADP, and really liked them, ONCE I figured out that the paint has to be VERY VERY thin going on. It's very easy to end up with a chalky baby if you use too much.

I wouldn't give up on the ADP just yet, just make your paint waterier. There are a couple of us that use or have used ADP and done well with them.

I agree with Kim, I also use ADP and I really like them.

Thanks for letting me know, I thought the paints were really thick when I applied them. I didn't thin them down. So yes I have got 3 chalky babies waiting by the sink for me to remove and wash, to start again. When I painted them, they looked ok, but it was when I put my glasses on a couple of days later, to do some detailing, and they look awful! lol! I hadn't realised my eyesight was so bad!!

Don't feel bad. I made that same mistake when I started using them too. If you think it's thin enough, thin it some more. Easier to put more layers on and get the look you're going for rather than ending up with chalky baby. lol.

Which ADP are you using?

They're Air Dry Paints from a company in England, Lillian Trigg of Rochester. I purchased the sealer and medium from her, to go with the paints at Christmas time. I've just spent the afternoon stripping the 3 kits! I'm waiting for Genesis paints to come through the post. I've looked at my other dolls I reborned using Genesis and much prefer the finish though. I'll let you all know how I get on smile

Just be sure if you are going to use the ADP's or Genesis, to use one or the other, not both. They will not mix.

Does anyone have experience with Luminaire air dry paints? Do they look, and wear, as well as Genesis paints? Apply as easily? Look as realistic?

Anyone have pictures to link me to?

I have small children, and I'm a little nervous about the smells from the Genesis Heat sets, and terrified of "overcooking" my baby. My son has a gift for picking the wrong time to get into trouble. Lol!

I haven't used Luminaire, due to financial constraints. If I had the money to buy the whole set, I would.

I hadn't noticed any smells from the GHSP, but me being forgetful is the reason I use the heat gun on my kits with GHSP. :)

I've used the luminare air dry and I think they turn out really nice. You just dont have as much control. They dry kinda fast so you are stuck with the color where as with Geneisis if you haven't baked you can take it off. So I guess the solution is to go on thinner than you think you should at first until you are comfortable with the mixing. They really need to be covered they will dry out pretty fast.I think the finished product will be just as good you just have to be more careful. I'll try to do a kit in each soon and i'll post a picture side by side for you.I can't remember which online suppliy store does it but one gives a really good tutorial. I'll look that up and get back to u also.

I haven't used the Luminaires but I have the airdry paints from DD. They have a really excellent tutorial on painting with the airdry paints. Most, if not all of the airdry's dry quickly so be forewarned. I like the Genesis because even if you booboo, you get a redo! And the color is peprmanent.

Pat, I've heard you say before that the ADP and GHSP don't mix. Why is that exactly?

I've used both on Connor, and he seems to be holding up well. Matter of fact, pretty sure I used both on David Michael as well.

Unless I'm missing something, I just don't see why both types couldn't be used, as long as ADP are dry before using GHSP.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I don't bake the babies, I use a heat gun to set.

Glad it works out for you hun using both. If you use the GHSP first and then apply the airdry over them there is no problem. Genesis says they are not compatible, and I could see that I guess, considering that they both get baked if you use them under the GHSP's. They are basically like acrylics and acrylics, like oils, are never to be baked. I would have to do more study on the ADP's. But that is the beauty of the ADP's... you don't have to bake them.
They may or may not be toxic when baked also, again, have to do more study on them myself. I don't know the toxicity level on acrylics, also, they have (not these particular ones) blamed in the past for migrating within the vinyl and causing bruising (look up in our search feature).

It may also be a fading factor but maybe it doesn't make a difference with the heat gun, still not sure about that. I know that all of the heat-set paints are made by Genesis, just in different colors and specs for each company like Secrist, etc. Have you tried using the ADP over the GHSP instead? I might give that a try with a "test" part to see how that works out.

I've done it both ways....GHSP first, then ADP, and reversed. Remember the first one I started with was Zoe, which had the GHSP with it, then I got BnB's ADP.

So I guess time will tell on them!

I started out over 6 years ago using artist chalks lol. I still have my very first reborn and she is still as perfect as the day I made her. Although you don't get the detail with chalks like you do with GHSP.

Yes, I remember your first, little Zoe. You were worried about using the GHSP's. Yes, with anything... time will tell. It will be interesting to keep track. :D
