Nice mohair ??

just wonder who people use for their mohair suppliers, and if anyone has someone (links please) who sells nice quality (i prefer straight) and nice colouring that doesn't break the bank. In particular it can be hard to find a nice mid brown that is neither *green* or *brassy* in tone.

I've got some on order from HongKong which looks just perfect, but am yet to recieve it so will wait and see before posting a link to them incase its a dud.

i haven't tried the secrist mohairs as they wont accept paypal, it looks nice though.

This isnt an answer, this is that I too need to know where the good mohair is. I paid a pretty price for premium and well, it breaks, matts, and , the 8 inch piece shreds into 2 inch pieces, and is hard to work with. I tried  bidding on one that  two different sellers recommended, but it ended up to be very high and there were only two lots.....the supply does not meet the demand.  I just need an easy outlet that doesnt require bidding and is very good mohair.  Thank you

tinyearthangels - the link you gave looks nice, i might order one or tow lots from her and see what i think. I do perferr the straight mohair, although this looks to be only a slight natural curl so it might be nice... when you have wet/sprayed this hair with water though does it turn really curly or just stay with the nice wave??

seriously i have so many packs of different hair here that i don't really like, i do have some still in stock thats really good but it seems whenever i find a hair that i'm happy with the company closes or only have one-off stocks - it can be such a mission trying to find quality look and feel hair that have on going stock.

I've sent her off an email asking about ordering 4 or 5 of the different colours on her website -- she only has a few on ebay just now so i've asked about placing an order for items not currently listed for auction... not heard back as yet but i hope its possible

We are all sold out of our awesome ultra mohair but we do still have the English mohair. It's a good price for some pretty good hair!
http://www.secristdolls.com/rooting_supplies?b=1

We should be getting some more ultra later on this summer (maybe toward the end of summer).

I got the mohair that i'd ordered from hong kong -- it looks delightful, the colour so natural and with a lovely shine... however thats where the delight stops. It is extreamly course, no softness to it at all, and i'm almost sure that it is not mohair after all - it has that almost plastic feel to it that i'm thinking its actually a synthetic instead.

However i dicided i'd at least give it a try on a baby before i past final judgment - it rooted ok, but looked shocking - it refused to lie flat even with directional rooting, and just felt awful. So i scalped the baby i had tryed it on and am about to start again with one of the other mohairs i have.

The product was called "mirical mohair" sold on ebay being sent from hong-kong, I'm not one to "product bash" but this one really was dissapointing and really isn't going to work if your wanting to create the most life like baby in both look and feel.

i still havent tried weaving dixie as yet. I got some from Lyns reborn world thats fantastic... the golden brown wasn't it has that green look to it. But her light brown and mid brown straight is just what i was looking for... my zoe sculpt boy has the light brown - my gumdrop in the artist showcase has the mid brown.

so ppl in aust if looking for some nice light and mid brown - lyns is good and really nicely priced. She's also a lovely woman.

Hi, I'm in America, so I don't know how well either weaving dixie or Lyns reborn world would work. Any other good suppliers, (or bad suppliers to stay away from)? Has anyone used the Pearl Moon Doll Hair that BB sells? Thank-You so much.

Are there any other good American suppliers? 'The Mohair Barn' is way beyond my price limits: $60 for an ounce! Lovely mohair, though. I saw a lot of mohair on ebay from a seller called *thee*wishing*well* or something like that, who had tons of good feedback, however none of them mentioned actually rooting it. Has anybody on here used it, and did you like it? Thanks.

OH, ok. She must be out of the ultra. Here's an idea... when you go to order mohair, ask them if they can send a small sample so you can try it. I have a woman who was selling and she sent me little samples attached to a card. It was really nice stuff! So after seeing (and rooting on a test limb) it in the sample, I ordered from her. It's some awesome mohair. And PS... don't get the cheap stuff from anyone! It's not worth the postage and they won't take it back if you don't like it.

I've used some of BB mohair and it's okay, but not as good as Kathy of Hope mohair is.  I was just looking to see if she had some one ebay, but all she has is the moses baskets.  These are really nice baskets for the price.  I have one or two of those.  I don't acutally need any mohair, but you can go to her website and click on her email and ask her if she has any and if  or when is she going to have it.  She's really sweet and in the USA.  her website is just like I wrote above..just add the www and the .com at the end of it.  If you  have any problems, write me and I'll ask her.

Secrist has still has a little bit of the Angel soft mohair (their premium stuff) and it's awesome. Only blonde and light left I think. Other than that, I just LOVE the hair from debbie mentioned above! The English from Secrist is good but it's alittle too fine for me. It would be really fine with the German forked needles but I use the 3 barb 43 gge needles.

Since i posted that up above, I've become much more experienced. First tip, do not buy from a big company. Mass produced mohair is almost never good. Buy from individual sellers who make the hair themselves. i love Slumberland hair, here is a picture of a doll I rooted with it:

https://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp155/AndreasDreamBabies/Rooting/DSCF2620.jpg

Susan Nagel's hair is also great. Angela's Reborn Mohair is good, too. There are lots of options, but it's usually better to pay more for the mohair. It's actually cheaper, because you have little or no waste, unlike cheap mohair with which you have to throw away half of it.

How do you purchase from the mohair vendors mentioned here?  Do they have websites or do they sell through the online auctions such as eBay?

I'm in the process of getting some premium mohair on a trade. I'm going to see how that stuff is. Its $20 1/2 oz.
Also, I'm rooting 2 heads right now with Secrist's Angelic Touch mohair. So far it's really fabulous! I'll show it in the showcase when I'm done. Already have my heads in there so 2 of them will be added again to show the mohair. :)

The question of where to find good mohair is like trying to find where to dig for goldwink.gif  I had bought some from Bountiful Baby and it was alright, it is here to the left on my baby. I also bought the Authentic Reborn Angel Touch mohair in black from Secrist and I have to tell you, not againno I haven't even put up the pictures of that baby because she looks so bad. She looks like she was in a horrible car accident and burned her hair off.no Also, I forgot to check for bleeding so it stained her head black. What a mess. Soon I will post her in the "Show us your completed Babies" section. So I guess Bountiful was better. However, it just isn't convincing. I checked out the Slumberland Nursery site and it looks good. I saw pics of the goats and they look well taken care of and happy. I say that because if they were not happy I would not buy. I believe animals should be treated well and not just for profit. Their hair looked better than some people I see everydaylaughing.gif When I saw Andrea D's picture (thanks) of the hair, I really liked it as I wasn't sure if it looked as good as the photos on the site. Quite pricy for a maybe but I will most likely buy from them next time.

I am also quite leary of most mohair as I have my own hydes and they are really lovely, so I'm spoiled that way. And I too have had some mohair I would never buy again!
As far as the Angelic Touch mohair, apparently you used the black (dark) and they had for quite some time on the site, that they would exchange the darker colors as they got a bad batch from the place where they get it from. I am using 2 colors of it now and it roots like a dream and looks really nice on my babies (I have them in the showcase).
But... to each their own. I do know that you don't always but most of the time you do get what you pay for. I have purchased some mohair for under $20 and it was not good at all. But then again (I know I'm waffeling here) just because you pay larger money doesn't mean it's good either. You gotta find someone that knows how to manufacture mohair, and how to dye it so it's colorfast!
Sorry you had issues with the AT mohair but I really like both of mine :) Hope you find some you like.

I saw the notice about the mohair but though perhaps it was worked out when I bought it. NOT! Yes......well....I still have some (half of it) and it's just sitting on my counter. I'm going to wash/rinse it so I at least have that. I will say, you are correct about how it roots. It does go in easily and it is very soft which is nice. I'm keeping it also because it is curly. I did two things wrong there so I don't know, maybe next time will be better. Also, it is true we get what we pay for but when on a budget it's kinda hard. I went cheapie on many things because I was so excited to get started but see that I really need quality stuff (brushes, mohair, etc.). God bless you that you have your own hydes, that's nice. Yeah.....hmm oh hum. Maybe next time will be better.

I know how it is to be on a budget. So I usually save up for the better stuff. Although I do get impatient because I too still get excited over this stuff, even after 20 years!! :)

I like that this newer AT stuff is kinda curly as curly is hard to find. Yep, if you just do the thorough rinse it should be fine for you. Be sure to lay it on a white papertowel to make sure it's clear.

I paid through the nose for the hydes (1 over $150!!) but it's really nice stuff. It's the usual white so I have to dye it all myself. I leave the hair on the hyde, cut a section of hyde and dye the hair right on it. Then when it's all done and dry, I cut whatever I need right from the hyde. It is nice. I'd buy more but the lady got divorced and the goats went, so no more hydes or meat from her. The ex didn't want the goats and she couldn't raise them by herself I guess. She cried cause she liked her goats and they all had names. :(

Aww sorry to hear about your friend. That is sad and I know it must have been hard for her. Your technique for dyeing your hydes sounds good as it seems it would better to handle during the dying (sp?) process. Still haven't done the rinse yet on mine. Will do tomorrow.

So far mohair purchasing has been a really unsatisfying experience for me.  Before this latest downturn in the economy, the price of mohair at least doubled since 2005/2006.  It just seemed to go up and down with the price of a gallon of gas.  For awhile I began to wonder if it was a petroleum product.  I just feel that people are trying to take advantage of others when there are such large jumps in price--that is, unless there is a really good reason for increase.  For instance, I don't understand why mohair that was previously sold in 1-oz. packages for at $25.00 each was suddenly sold in 1/2-oz. packages for the same price.  Secrist was selling some mohair for a short time that cost $40+ per 1/2-oz.  It was very nice mohair and came with a little barrette or something.  But $40+ per 1/2 oz is too expensive for many people despite the cute little hair bling.

It makes less and less sense when the quality of the more expensive is not proportionally higher than the lower priced mohair.  With the exception of the Secrist $40+ mohair I mentioned, my experience has been that some of the really expensive mohair is not significantly better than the lower priced mohair.

So... Emily I completely agree that purchasing mohair is like digging for gold (or maybe drilling for oil).  I would love to use the Angelic Touch, but once burned, it's difficult to put faith in that product a second time.  Reborn artists and dealers should not have to disturb the packaging to test each little package for colorfastness.

And so... I'm always happy to know where others get mohair and their satisfaction when they use it.

Humm that is something about the changes in mohair prices? I mean it's not like they have to drive freight or anything to compensate for higher gas prices (although some use that as an excuse). I don't know, but when I get the Slumberland mohair, I'll let you know how it turned out. $40 for 1/2 of mohair???? Wow! My babies would all be fabulously bald it that were still the case. There is now way I could afford that. BTW I like that, "hair bling" lol that's cuteaww

LOL, Emily.  Sometimes something remotely clever ends up being typed.  I have to confess I borrowed "bling" from Precious Moments Dolls  "Girls Rule" collection.  One of their dolls is "Bling, Bling Baby" and she is decked out with accessories.

I have high hopes for the mohair you ordered, and I would love to know what you think of it.

I'll let you all know on the mohair I ordered too (when I get time to root it). It looks fabulous in the package (as do many that also aren't worth the money). So I'll keep ya posted! :)

I am following this thread as I am a breeder of colored angora goats and it is always nice to know what the end user is looking for.  As for the prices going up and down on mohair, let me explain a bit from the producer point of view.  As the price of gas goes up, so does the price of producing grain, which in turn drives up the cost of goat feed and add the cost to transport the feed to the goat owner.  Goats also need hay during the off season.  Higher fuel prices drive up the cost for producing  hay.  It is costing the goat owner a lot more to feed their animals than it used to.  The quality of mohair is directly proportionate to the feed and care of the goat.  Poor quality/cheap feed produces poor quality mohair.  Also take into consideration that goats need deworming and vaccinations, which also cost money.  If a goat owner is cheap in the deworming and vaccinations, you get mohair that is brittle and breaks as the goat is anemic from the internal parasites, or if it has been sick you get weak spots in the growth of the mohair during that illness.  The fall shearing of mohair is always nicer than the spring shearing.  If you buy a fleece directly from a farm, you can get a lot of questions answered about the goats fleece.  When you buy it from someone who has washed, combed, and conditioned it for you, you are depending upon them for the quality control of the end product.  Angela from Red Falcon Ranch www.redfalconranch.com

OMGoodness! Thank you Angela for your informed explanation. That really helps me in making my decision of whom to buy from. As I said in an earlier post, I care deeply for animals and even give to organizations to care for them. So I am concerned about the health of the goats. This was enlightening, so thanks again.smile

Your welcome!  Also, keep in mind, that the premium mohair comes from colored angora goats.  That is how you keep the mohair from getting a brassy or green tint.  Colored mohair has pigment running through the shaft.  When you cut the mohair, you do not have a white or strange dye colored core in the hair shaft.  When you dye colored mohair you can keep the highlights and low lights due to the pigmentation layers already there.  When you dye white mohair you get the flat color.  Now, another explanation of why the premium colored mohair is so much more expensive.  For thousands of years angora breeders have selected for white goats.  Any goat born with any color was killed.  15 - 20 years ago several breeders in the country wanted the natural colored mohair without having to dye it.  They put the word out that they would take any unwanted colored kids born.  They also bred the angoras to other breeds to bring the color back in and then worked on suceeding generations to get the mohair back to a fine quality after the introduction of other breeds.  Since goats have kids just once a year, and not until they are 1 1/2 years old, there are approximately at the the most 15 generations or so of colored angora goats, with the earliest generations not being purebred.  There are not a lot of colored angoras as compared to the huge number of white angoras.  Supply and demand.  A good doll hair quality colored angora goat will cost $400 to $600, with the darker the mohair the higher the cost.  Compare that to a high quality white angora goat that can be bought for $100.  In June I am buying a brown "grandma" goat for $600 and driving half way across the country to get her - ouch, drives up the cost again - but she has the potential when bred to my brown buck to get the elusive natural dark brown, which is, by the way, elusive and which challenges me to breed for dark brown.  I have searched high and low for just the right genetics, kids next spring will tell me if it worked.  Now, to shrink the pool of available colored mohair, many people who breed the colored angoras do so for their own use of the mohair and sell only the extra.  Fortunately for dollhair processers, I have been busy with 6 human kids and homeschooling and haven't had time to use my own mohair smile  Last winter was a hard winter across the country.  The fleeces sheared in the spring may or may not reflect that, depends on how well the goats were fed and kept.  They can stand the cold when fed enough feed for calories and hay to keep them warm from the inside out.  It is the cold rains and winds that are hard on a goat.  Those in a more moderate climate had a tough winter sneak up on them and my or may not have had adequate shelter.  You are always going to have more VM in a winter fleece than a summer fleece and your summer fleeces are always nicer than the fleeces that grew through the winter.  If you think you can avoid that scenario by moving down south to a warmer climate, you have just now entered the sand bur zone.  So many things for a goat owner to manage besides just feeding the critters!!  If you get a batch of mohair that is just wonderful, remember all that took for that animal and it's owner to produce that luxurious lock!!
